Many People Seem To Think That An Individual’s Brain Power Can Be Assessed By Their Academic Talents, But The Reality Couldn’t Be Further From The Truth
There is always much argument when exam results are published about whether exams are not as hard as they once were or whether more complex ways of evaluating students’ work these days makes getting good results more achievable. The discussion will no doubt take place again this time around and in years to come, but to be honest I’m not particularly interested what the reality is. What I do find annoying is that even for someone who has been working for twenty-five years or longer an initial assessment of a job applicant’s capabilities will still include their education, when what they have done since leaving school or college might well far eclipse what exams they sat.
Equally, being able to learn one subject inside out in order to an outstanding result in an exam, does not actually mean that you will be a model employee or that you are in possession of the common sense or day to day skills necessary to begin a new job and be good at it. I have colleagues who are brilliant at the subject they studied at university, but perform atrociously in other aspects of their lives.
In my opinion, it is necessary to find a combination of the two – qualifications and experience. I didn’t get great exam results when I studied, for several reasons, but I have always tried to continue learning. It is true that the more you know, the more you want to find out, as everything you learn leads you to find out about other things. I know a lot more about many subjects now than I ever did before and I will continue to show an interest in, investigate and find out about any topic at all that I think I should know about. It renders any social situation so simple to deal with if you have a background knowledge of a number of different topics as that you can always show an interest in what is being talked about and can participate in the conversation.
But on a positive note, not having especially outstanding exam results meant that when I got a job I started doing the most basic tasks. And what a brilliant way to start in a new job! You get to learn about the business from the basics onwards, picking up many useful skills along the way. Always questioning things and gaining knowledge from the answers gives you a complete understanding of how the business works and progressing through the ranks means you get respect from your colleagues that you cannot put a price on. You don’t just start as a manager and start telling people what to do. Instead you can identify with what your staff have to do every day because you’ve done it yourself in the past.
Of course I understand that some careers need proper intensive studying and training – I wouldn’t be keen to encourage my dentist or my Laser eye surgeon to be relying simply on CSE Biology before they began fixing my teeth or performing Laser eye surgery to correct my sight. And I don’t think I’d want someone fixing my car engine or carrying out repairs to the faulty Laser eye beam in my CD player if they hadn’t studied to become a mechanic or an engineer. But there are countless jobs which don’t ask for such detailed training and with these jobs surely an employer should be considering the applicant’s experience every bit as much as exam results from decades ago.
In fact, I would definitely choose to be what I am rather than what I may have been, though it may have taken a long time to settle on that conclusion. I feel pity for those people who believe that their days of learning are finished when they leave school and whose days then consist only of dull and boring television programmes and little else, because they can’t find any reason to question anything that might challenge their minds. (Yes, these kind of people are real – I’ve encountered some of them!)
I’m proud of the fact that I can converse about numerous subjects – from ballet to punk, football to cycling, gastric bands to Laser eye surgery, Charles Dickens to Terry Pratchett, Ancient Greece to Hanoverians. I might not be an expert, but I will be happy to get involved in the conversation.
So, in reality, I don’t believe that anyone should just be judged on their academic talents. To do that is to disregard the huge amount of knowledge that we can all take an interest in every day of our lives.
